Default rear end help and questions

All this info is great, and a little overwhelming, but I have a question... I talked to a guy locally who does ford 9' rears for any car/truck, and he mentioned something about the "offset"?? I'm a little puzzled and he won't explain unless I buy from him, but I'm not ready to buy until I have all the info I feel I need. Is there a GM rear that will fit(I can weld new perches if nesc.) my quarters are cut gasser-style, and I'm looking at running either 8.5 or 10" wide rear wheels, I don't want them sticking out but even with the quarters looks good, to me anyway. Any help would be appreciated, thanks. PS, I'm on a pretty tight budget!!

By "offset" I think he means the axle tubes are not even. If someone is not willing to explain to me upfront a question I have, I typically don't do business with them. I bought my 9" from Quick Performance a sponsor hear.
http://www.quickperformance.com/

They answered all my question told me of options (10 or 12 bolt) and sent me my rear in pieces which were all bolt together. The center section & gears were one unit ready to be bolted onto housing. Perches were welded on and they will make it stock or narrow width.

OFFSET; regarding ANY rear axle assembly but pertaining to a 9" as discussed, means the distance from the face of the axle flange to the face of the bearing housing end. Ford has a list of three that are common and an occasional odd ball. Std. Dims are as follows - 2.5, 2.36, 2.25 and (Oddball) 2.00 Looking at the image below, "G" is the offset distance and will have a place in your build when it comes to supplying/ordering rear brake systems, regardless of drum or disc. Each, unless changed by the PO, is determined by YOM and application.

Width to task, that, is the question. In other words, what is the plan? Stock appearance, modified, gasser, canyon carver, pro street and so on. Again, width to task. Tires? Stock, 275, 295, 300, 315 or 345 and bigger.

The variables to task are numerous. In other words - Not enough info.

What are you're plans for the car? Tire width and or style(slick, drag radial, tire bulge)? Deep Dish wheel? Wanting the look? Wanting the performance? These are important things to consider and nail down so people can give you advise and options. I know this road all too well and if I could do it over again, better planning would have saved me headaches and money in the long run.
