Default Anyone else have a locked-out timing advance?

My set up:

Blueprint 383
http://blueprintengines.com/index.ph...ed-bp38313ctc1

Swapped out HEI distributor for firewall clearance in V-8 position
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/msd-8570

Running MSD AL-6 ignition box and MSD Blaster coil
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/msd-6425/overview/

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/msd-8202/overview/

Upon initial start-up my timing was way too advanced - about 10 degrees. Motor wants to die the closer I move to the right timing marks (10-16 at idle or 32-34 at rev). Called Blueprint and they recommended locking out the advance. Said that much advance could do catastrophic damage.

Instrux on Page 4, Fig 7
https://static.summitracing.com/glob...0_frm28913.pdf

I did it and it starts great, idles great, and revs great - no complaints. But I wanted to be sure that it's okay to have no advance - 34 degrees at idle or high rev.

So I called Blueprint again and really went over what I did. He thought I was locking out the vacuum and didn't know I now had no mechanical advance whatsoever. He could not believe it cranks right up and idles just fine. Have not tried to drive it yet until I'm sure it's okay. He told me to call MSD. MSD told me to call Blueprint. So I'm kind of on my own here.

I googled up some hot rod threads and found camps on both sides of the fence. What say you?

Thanks,

That might be OK for a tractor or if you have EFI with electronic timing control. If it idles, it won't pull it's own weight downhill.

That's not the way to run a street engine. It will probably ping like crazy under some conditions. It also should be really hard to start once it's warmed up in warmer weather, it will kick back against the starter.

Get it set up the right way with both mechanical and vacuum advance.

It doesn't have a vacuum advance. I know it's not the right set-up, but it won't run with the mech advance except for way too far forward. I don't want a strip set up, just a street rod.

Where did you try to set the initial timing? 34 degrees?

Have you checked the timing mark for being on at TDC?

No, that's for total timing. Initial should be 10-16 degrees. But it won't run there.

I pulled the #1 plug and was going to turn the crank bolt, but I can't even get a socket on it without pulling the radiator.

I originally had suspected that the timing mark was off on the damper, but it's a 400 external balanced HB from Summit. They should all be the same.

I run a MSD ProBillet dist, and MSD 6AL BTM box. My dist is locked out at 36 degrees with the BTM box taking out timing as boost is added. My car runs 93 octane and is driven on the street with no issues.

I'm running 93 octane also. Motor has 10:1 compression. It runs great locked out at 34 degrees - idle or load. I just can't understand why it won't even idle anywhere near 10-16 degrees, or run at 34 under load with the weights and springs installed. The only way to get the numbers down were to remove the weights and springs. With them on it ran great but Blueprint said those numbers were way too high and it could cause detonation/damage.
