Port volume on a small block and big block are 2 different things completely. BBC rect port heads don't make any decent power until about 4000 rpm. comparing a BBC rect port head to a sbc head is not even reasonable. most everyone knows that a good oval port head is a better option for a street engine. the 396 also is bigish bore short stroke combo and typicaly with a rect port head is a turd until 4500 rpm. just not a great combo on the street.

Both engines use a similar design port & are of the same manufacturer in my world the comp is reasonable.

Its apples & oranges your talking track high performance HP logic I'm talking torque for stop light to stop light street use. Anything with 400 ft lb of torque = a quick grocery getter.

All of this is interesting. I have built a 402 before and I was well pleased with it. This one will not be a beast by no means but it will do what I want witch is sound good and look good under the hood. I am well beyond the lead foot stage in my life. In my 59 years of life I have learned that if you tare them up you have to fix them and that cost to much.
