Default More on Auto Gear transmissions

I have been gettin long emails, phone calls and pictures with questions about Auto Gear 4 speed transmissions (muncie replacement). One person said they have a new M-24 trans on the market NOT SO. As George (chief engineer and owner of Auto Gear Eng) has explained to me these changes/improvements are all a part of improving their standard line of transmission and trans parts.

Auto Gear is not a company that stands still and so they have designed an all new case on a very limited market basis (more about the market later) The new case is their on going effort to make improvements in their products line. The case does not resemble the old muncie case but is an effort to put forth a stronger case that pushes their own brand identity. At present this case is only available in their "Knock down kits". The knock down kit is a complete trans unassembled and comes in 2 boxes and requires assembly. This all new Muncie case is A LOT stronger than the Super Muncie Case and I await some figure on this. But with street cars pushing ever higher horse power levels, sounds like this case is just in time.

I have been selling their knock down kits since they put them on the market and like I said the trans needs a total assembly. These kits contain a few different designed parts (improvements) and might appear unfamiliar to the guy who only rebuilds one every few years.

In addition to this Auto Gear has made improvement to many of their parts. For example some of the new M-22 clusters AND INPUT SHAFTS are now made from 9310 nickel alloy steel and are SHOT PEENED AND POLISHED so to be much stronger.

This is all good news especially the price points which make their transmission the very best buy in the market place both from a superior product at a great price.

A word (or two) about their line of straight cut teeth transmissions that whine. In order to understand this gear whine and how much or how little it whines. The noise (whine) is caused by vibration between the teeth which in turn comes from poor spacing between the teeth. I have customers tell me that the new Auto Gear trans do not whine like the old Gm boxes. This is true and the reason for this is that we now use CNC machines with better cutting material. This in turn gives more accurate spacing between the teeth less vibration and less whine. A suggestion from Auto Gear is want more whine, buy gears from Tiawan.

I have been in this business since 1982 and am a distributor for Auto Gear Eng. As always tech infor is free, check out my warranty on Auto Gear Eng Transmissions. Gary The Muncieman

Funny you should mention that. The m22-Z you built for me with the Italian auto gear components was quieter then I expected. The whine is just right though, not too loud, but just enough to hear that classic sound!

In 1966, when the M-22 was offered as an RPO(Regular Production Option), one of the most distinctive features, which some people like and some do not, was the whine. if a GM car such as a Corvette, Chevelle, etc, was passing down the street, and a whine was heard as it passed by (only in 1-2-3 gears), everyone (that is most gear heads) instinctively knew the transmission was an M22. Not only did the M22 have a noticeable whine, but it was also stronger as a result of the different angle of the teeth. Frequently, when a person with a 4sp car was asked what kind of transmission was in their car, they would often claim to have an M22 (back in the day, having an M22 in your car was a big deal). But as soon as they started their car and drove away, you knew they DID NOT have an M22!!!
The down side of having an M22 was that they were ONLY a close ratio 4sp--------------not very compatible with a high geared rearend such as a 3.08, 3.36, etc. Today, wide ratio M22 type gears are available. Thus, if you are an old school lover of the M22 whine, but want a more hiway compatible rear gear ratio for the hiway (such as me), wide ratio M22 style gears are available ------------------------BUT I AIN'T BUYING ASIAN GEARS TO GET THE WHINE!!!! I've been buying Italian M22W gear sets for the Muncies in my cars, and I've been very pleased with them. But I will admit, the gear whine of the Italian M22W gears that I have installed are not quite as loud as the old original GM M22 gears. I particularly love the "M22" whine in my 70 Chevelle! I'm just not interested in having a quiet 4sp in an old time performance/muscle car. The M22 whine was just part of the mystique of the true muscle car!
Sorry, I guess I'm just still hung up in the past. Big cubes, 4spds, positraction, 2x4 carbs, fuel injection, etc, etc.

Maybe the people who don't like the whine should be driving a 4dr Dodge with a slant 6 and auto tranny.

Hi Tom Thats the great thing about having options so each can satisfy their individual needs. I do hope you knew George was speaking tounge in cheek with his crack about off shore gears. Always good to hear from an old timer like myself.
