Not sure how much help higher education would be in this case...

There are several different terms used, all of them "correct" in their own right. Here's my shot at it (and I'm not claiming absolute authority here):

"ECU" - Engine Control Unit or possibly Electronic Control Unit (not typically used by GM, to my knowledge)

"ECM" - Engine Control Module (typically used when the computer only controls the engine)

"PCM" - Powertrain Control Module (typically used when the computer controls both the engine and transmission)

"TCM" - Transmission Control Module (stand-alone transmission controller for electronic transmissions, where the engine either is not computer controlled, or has its own control module)

"BCM" - Body Control Module (to control bodily functions - err, I mean, stuff contained in the vehicle body not directly controlling the engine or transmission - system monitors, gauges, trip/fuel economy readouts, etc.)

There have been various versions and combinations over the years. They have separated out and combined functions over time - can't really say any one covers you in all cases.

Default ECM

For you guys who mounted your computors inside the car, how did you get the harness trough the firewall or other area without opening a several inch size hole? Or is that the idea and use a nice cover plate after? Thanks

Helped a friend put this harness in the other day and he went through inspection plate on floor/firewall. Trimmed the plate to fit around the large harness. Sealed it up with RTV and home made grommet.

ECM and PCM's (IE computers) are mounted stock under hood. Temps can get 150+ were they are in there, potentially more. Doesn't really need air flow I wouldn't wrap or cover it with carpet or insulation.

Mine is located in trunk on back seat wall, I purchased a 8' extended harness and it saved me a whole lot of aggravation as I really had no good place to install it. It mounts in a stock GM tray with quick release for easy maintenance if needed.
