Hi, some advice please. I've what I think is a 55 Chevy rear end axle, just posted for sale on CL. I had earlier taken it to the dump, but the worker said it was too valuable to toss away (valuable as in "hard to get"), that I should offer it. If nobody responds to the ad, do I go ahead and dump it without feeling that I've committed a car-collectors-sin? I'm in Hawaii, so there is probably very limited interest here, and shipping would be costly. Thus my thoughts that it might head back to the dump.
Advice? Is this part worth fussing over, or is tossing it just fine?
Thanks for the leads. Meanwhile, was my first inclination correct in that this part ... if not claimed soon .... is something that I could toss away without being foolish (I hate to "waste" an important part). Then again, junk is junk.
The only value a stock 55 rear end would have would be with someone doing a restoration. They aren't a real strong rear end and with newer engine combinations would be the weak link. This of course is the observations of one that used to scatter them with 6500 rpm clutch dumps. With an automatic and driven reasonably, they would be adequate.
Ah, so it sounds like it is not something that would be out of bounds to just drop off at the metal bin should it come to that. I appreciate your helpfulness. [I did take the suggestion to PM the Hawaii members, I sent to those who had posted since 1-1-2014.]
As a rule I don't ever toss a trifive part that is still good. Someone has a use for it somewhere. It would also not be too bad to ship if you broke it down (pull the axles and center chuck) and listed those items for sale on Craigslist or Ebay.
I am on the Big Island (Kona side). I've a "couple of days plan" to lower the price on CL until it gets to the "time to recycle bin" amount. My thought was to not waste the part, but I cannot do any mechanics myself. I'm not even positive what it is.
Here's the pics. (But my climbing around in the back looking for numbers is an activity being reserved for if someone actually wants it, so I know I'm just offering limited info here.)
