I've seen a number of posts that suggest air flow is compromised by changing the original set up to paper. If it isn't broke, why fix it? I run the later style 55/56 2bl oil bath. Haven't seen any issues.

That's what I reckon. Clean what you have and use it. (I wish I hadn't changed mine.)

PAPER FILTER REPLACEMENTS FOR OIL BATH AIR CLEANERS

WIX 46175 requires 1/4" gasket at top of filter
NAPA 22055, must use part of old oil bath filter guts (top?)

55-56 4 bbl:
K&N E-3650
WIX 46220

1957 4 bbl:
K&N E-3630
STP AF5HD
WIX 42050
Purolator A30005 (the A30067 is just about 1/8" too short. A small gasket or thin weatherstrip will make it fit)
Fram CA-1 or CA-151
Hastings AF5

1958 348 4 bbl:
STP SA148

For 55-57 235 six cylinder non-oil bath air cleaners:
WIX filter #46094

I converted my '57 to paper years ago, no problem with performance.

I am with Joe on this one. Converted the oil bath on my 4BC to a paper element and never had a problem with performance, and my engine is a 350 dressed with period correct components to look stock.

I can't say from experience. Mine had the tiny little paper filter in the cheapo chrome piece when I got the car. I immediately replaced it with the oil bath, and did notice an improvement. I was only referring to hearsay. However, that does lead me to wonder, what are the benefits of modifying the orginal to accept the paper?
