SOME people (such as Tom Ordway) have been able to assemble such a combination. BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT, the side-to-side adjustment of the carrier just does not work out well at all.
If is is desirable to change gears in a 55 or 56 case, the BEST method is to use ALLLLLLLLLLLL the guts from a 57-64 rear, INCLUDING the ring gear carrier/differential. This will permit retaining the original (to the car) rearend case with its matching numbers and at the same time having a gear ratio that is more desirable for the car owner.
As some people here know, I am a big fan of 3.08 gears (which is the highest ratio available in the 55-64 style rearends). All of my cars with this type of rearend have big enough engines, that torque from a dead stop is a non-issue. I HATE today's gas prices, but nothing can bring us back to the days of .25cents/gal. So I go with the highest ratios available to achieve the best fuel economy possible--------------especially on the Interstate (I sometimes do drive my cars 70-90mph). I love running the 56 Vette up to around 120mph! But that's rare, even out in the middle of nowhere.
