Default Smog check fail.

Came time to do it on my old crummy pickup (88 Chevy 1/2 ton). "FAIL". The thing passed every test with flying colors, except the "fuel evap leak" test.

I thought of the fuel cap at first, but the fuel cap test says 'pass'. They are cheap so I'm going to get a new one anyway.

The guy at the test station couldn't answer any of my questions by law, other than to say that I should take it to a shop to get it pressurized with smoke so the leak could be found. He couldn't even recommend a shop to take it to, again by state law.

Does anyone here know where I should look next? Is the charcoal canister involved in this function?

I had an emission "fuel evap leak" failure a few years back due to the electric fuel pump plastic housing having small cracks, a leak. New pump resolved the problem.

Its kinds sad in Ca. when the station guy can't give you a couple answers when you ask because of some state law. But if his mom or dad came along with their vehicle and failed,he would sure without a doubt help them pass right off the bat.Over here where i go,if it fails at least they'll tell you in detail what failed, what may help in troubleshooting and/or lead you in the right direction. Man o man, whats this world coming to.

Same here. They actually give you a print out of possible causes for whatever the fail was.

If the cap isn’t leaking why waste money. Yes charcoal canister is in the evap system. Its a leak from tank to charcoal canister to motor. You need to narrow it down. Manuals for you truck are cheap buy one and ID the lines and test and vaccum test with a hand help pump. If line leaks replace it.

You need to check the lines to tank, charcoal canister and mine to TBI unit. I would visible inspect all the evap lines you may just see the issue a damaged line.

I just cringe at the thought of having to unbolt and slide that bed back again. I've done that several times over the many decades I've had that truck. That process will be last on my list after I check everything else first. Should have cut a hatch in the bed floor like I was going to do the last time I had to go through that to replace the pump.

You're right Mikko. This week hasn't been much fun at all. Failing a smog test isn't the end of the world, but it sure is depressing in a way. Almost would rather get stuck in an elevator again. LOL
