The bottom of the wood floor in my 68 is painted black from the factory.Maybe some kind of preservative?

No, but mine is a '69 and has the black plywood deck. Must be close to 1" thick too! Mine has a retrofitted access door to the fuel tank cut into the floor and edged with metal. It was very handy when I had to replace the sending unit, and did it without dropping the tank!

But according to those same guys the stepside beds stayed wood up to 1987.
