  1. Transmission and DriveLine Questions
I am going to have to purchase and ship a "new" (used) differential to my car overseas. I have a 1955 Bel Air 4-door sedan. It is my understanding that I need a 60" (drum face to drum face) differential. Is that correct? Also, does anyone know, if I can only find a 60.5" or 60.75"...
  2. Stock Chevy Discussion 55-56-57
I have an original equipped 1956 Chevy. Driving down the 4 lane highway at 70 mph really revs the engine up and feels like I need another gear. I’m considering changing out my stock 3 speed transmission for a 3 speed with overdrive. The rear end is the original 3.70. The engine is the...
  3. Transmission and DriveLine Questions
Hey everybody! The 3:73 or whatever is the original 6 cyl gears in my 1956 150 are too low. With a Turbo 350, the engine RPM is way too high (4000-4500?) at 60 MPH. I have been told the 55-56 rear ends are not durable, and will fail eventually even when just used in a "cruiser". Should I... 1)...

Relating to a original 56 wagon, 235 three speed. seems when a GM Nova 8.5 10 bolt is installed the driveshaft needs to be shortened 1.5"? 5. Transmission and DriveLine Questions
Trying to determine what rear end is in my 56 Bel Air. Originally it was a 3 on the tree 6 cyl, subsequent owner changed to 350 crate engine with 700R4 transmission. Don't know if the rear end was changed. See attached photo. These are the only markings on the rear end. Can't find anything...
  6. Transmission and DriveLine Questions
So I finally got my 56 running well enough to try some power braking to try and smoke the tires. What I discovered was my car is Putting down TWO two marks on the street, and from all the great info on TriFive.com has lead me to believe it is a stock 1956 Chevy rear end with 3:73 gears. I'm...
  7. Transmission and DriveLine Questions
Finally done with my 56. Runs and drives great, except.. When I get up to 60 MPH, the small block is revved up more than I like. What is better - go from the 3:73 gears to say 3:08, or change the Turbo 350 to a 400, or? Any input is appreciated.
  8. Transmission and DriveLine Questions
I'm going to have my rear axle rebuilt and install new 373 gears and Timken bearings. Id like to ask experienced folks who have the same exact rear that I do (Stock 1957 Bel Air rear end) what the best practice is. And are the copper washers on the bolts necessary?

I have a factory style 283 powerpack engine with the high compression heads and four barrel carburetor. I just purchased a 3.55 ratio 3rd member which has gaulded spider gears. Obviously these will need replaced. I've never went through a 3rd member before, so I'm curious if you could swap a set of spider gears out of another 3rd member which is not the same ratio or not. I think you can, but I'm...
