ok guys i got a question, i have this 50's kodak camera i bought long time ago, the camera came with its original box with manuals and all, and also with a sealed brand new film roll dated 1957, i opened it and took some photos, now my question is, can i develop this film? like in a cvs or walgreens?

Though it's hard to find the film, I found my local Rite-Aid (like a Walgreens) still develops it. -As it's likely B&W film, make sure and mark the back of the drop off envelope the store supplies Black & White.
Don't be too optimistic, - film does have a shelf life.

Chances are slim to none that film that old would be any good.

Kodachrome is a slide film that Kodak manufactured. It does have shelf life for accurate color. It tends to highlight the red tones and age shifts it more that way. Kodak still developes it as far as I know. most places like Walgreens send it out now for development.

Boxed as in NEW condition? It's a valuable find!

KodaChrome came in both slide and print version and is color. It uses Chromium as the reactant to light radiation.

even if stored at the perfect temp - and was perfectly sealed - time is a killer to film as it looses its sensitivity to the light bomabardment due to hardening of the surface layers - and the half life of the chromium - just like uranium slowly dies even when sealed up in the Nevada desert (or so we hope) so it gets more likely to underexpose with time. the Brownie (one of which was my first camera) does not have a shutter speed or aperture adjustment - so you get what you get - sometimes the developer can compensate - but with most development using the new equipments (and operators - I doubt that 18 year old gal working the photo counter even knows who Simon and Garfunkel are let alone how to rescue under-exposed KodaChrome) are not going to be able to compensate. Your best bet is to call around and find an old guy or gal running a small shop - but unfortunately they are mostly gone due to the ease of modern development - or try some of these folks (and the good news is you can still find fresh film for it) - http://www.brownie-camera.com/buyfilm.shtml
ohhhhh the memories:

When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school
It's a wonder I can think at all
And though my lack of education hasn't hurt me none
I can read the writing on the wall.

Kodachrome, they give us those nice bright colors
Give us the green of summers
Makes you think all the world's a sunny day, oh yeah
I got a Nikon camera, I love to take photographs
So mama don't take my Kodachrome away.

If you took all the girls I knew when I was single
And brought 'em all together for one night
I know they'd never match my sweet imagination
Everything looks worse in black and white.

When my Poppa passed away, I found a roll of film in his desk. I can't find anyone that either can or is willing to develope it.
If you can find a professional photographer who has his own darkroom you might be able to talk him into developing it... He may want a lot of $$$ to do it though...

So, that film was discontinued in 1956. And expired in '57. I'd guess it was manufactured in '54 or '55.

Looks like you can get it developed if you are willing to pay the high cost. I'm really surprised that they say there is a chance you could actually get a picture with it. Sounds like at best, they won't be good and at worst, you get nothing.

Oh, but the box looks new, so you've got that 99.9% chance they will be fine!

Just ribbing you.:wavey:

Actually even BETTER chance of compensated development saving it! The reactant is silver based not chromium - silver has no half life (can you imagine deterating solder?) - so underexposure would not be as relevant! However its stil iffy!

And black and white is easier to compensate exposure (under and over makes it look artsy)!

Good deal.

About 4 or 5 years ago I was curious and did a test.

I took some Kodachrome 25 slides and scanned them with a high-resolution scanner. The resolution was higher than the grain size of the film.

I then compared those scans to the the images from a 6 megapixel cmos DSLR. The digital camera had superior resolution. It wasn't even close.

However, Kodachrome has a loyal following but it's got to be because of the colors rather than from the resolution.

Plus, digital processors continue to evolve. I would imagine that those loyal followers of Kodachrome wont miss it when the digital processors get to a certain level. For me, it's already there and then some.

There are still a lot of photographers out there that have a stash of Kodachrome. But I've heard that lone place that can do the processing will stop at the end of this year. Unless someone else picks that up, all the left over rolls of Kodachrome will be useless. You can't process this stuff on your own like many other kinds of film.

A friend of mine did much the same thing a year or so ago - and got much the same results - however he pointed out to me there is one thing that a CMOS can not do that film can - sense the light and reflected spectrums across an area larger than the pixels - limits some of the (albeit strange) visuals one can do with the shot itself - yes this can be duplicated with the post shot reworking (photoshopping) - but for some enthusiast it just ain't the same as getting the effect at the push of the shutter button!
