Which OD would be better behind a 265 V8? Or does it not make a difference?

The starter mount problem is the same for either. You need one of the starter adapter plates that are sold.

For a street driven cruiser, the real difference between a 700-R4 and a 200-4R is the gear ratios. 700-R4 has a 3.06 1st gear and a 0.70 o/d gear. 200-4R has a 2.75 1st gear and a 0.67 o/d gear. The 700-R4 slightly favors heavy cars and trucks, and underpowered engines. The 200-4R slightly favors lighter cars and more power. A 265 falls in the underpowered category, and a 55-57 is not particularly light.

One small advantage of the 200-4R is that it's the same length as the stock transmissions. So if you don't move the engine forward, you can keep your stock driveshaft and just change the yoke. A 700-R4 is 3" longer than the stock transmissions.

Except for the transmission length, putting either one in your car is pretty much the same. Shifters, TV cables, etc. will be the same. If you convert to a crossmember, they won't go in the same place but since you don't have one that doesn't matter.

Thanks Rick......What rear gear would you recommend for the 700-R4 and 265 V8 combonation?

What about the weight of the tranny itself? What's the difference in weight between a 700-R4 and a 200-4R?

There's not going to be much difference if any.

The extra 3" length on a 700-R4 might add a small bit of weight. But once installed, that would even out a little bit, because the 3" shorter driveshaft would be a small bit lighter.

either way you go the 200 or 700 are both way lighter than a cast iron powerglide probably 75lbs less :happy0030:

A possible crazy question, so please bear in mind that I'm not a mechanic .... How feasible, if even possible, is it to put a 200 or 700 r4 on a 235 inline six? My I6 was rebuilt about 3K miles ago (after 60K original miles) and runs great while the tranny itself has never been touched.

Perhaps I'm too attached to the 235? I confess I like the atypical style of it and the look of the Blue Flame 140. I'd really like to avoid an engine swap since it's a rebuilt engine with a beautiful blue paint job and hard to find power steering brackets. I'm basically researching my options for the day when the original tranny gives out, which could be tomorrow or ten years from now....

The 200R4 has a better overdrive, fits in the stock location. I used one in my 81 Malibu for years. It was rebuilt with a shift kit and few other mods and threw a Gran National lock up convertor in there. Used a vacumn (?)sw to activate convertor. Would shift around 5500 rpm at full throttle.
I ran a 355 small cam,carb , headers and a 3.23 posi. Car ran an easy 13 sec pass driving off the street into the lanes without opening the hood. Got around 15 around town and about 22 on the highway taching 1700-1800 at 70 mph.

I run a 200-4R behind my 283 with 3.70 rear end. It's a nice setup and the 200 is the same length as the cast iron glide so I didn't have to shorten the driveline.
