3 Speed transmission

I have a good 3 speed that I would like to put in my 55 but it does not have any holes drilled on the tail shaft to attach a shifter to. Should I drill it out ?
I don't know how I would ever mount a shifter

Are you talking about aq manual 3 speed or an automatic?
It has been a while since I fooled with a manual shifter, but it has been my experience that the shifter were either column or floor mounted. On the floor mounts the shifter was mounted that the lickage would line up with the shift levers on the tranny. I have never seen one mounted to the tail shaft.
3 speed transmission

Are you installing a floor shifter, I have one in the shop it has brackets that mount to the transmission to the bellhousing, if you need one let me know and i will look for it and send it to you, or if you need a 3 speed transmission with shifter mounts on the side I have one of them to. If your transmission has the bosses for a shifter on the side you can drill them out and tap them but if it dont, dont drill it will go threw the tail shaft. Later Bill

Is is a stock saginaw 3 speed with non syncro first gear? or the later version? Long tail shaft or short? If my memory serves me right, the Hurst shifter I installed in my 55 uses 3 of the 4 bolts that hold the tailshaft to the main case. I can go look tomorrow

I am installing a floor shifter. I think I probably need a shifter like you are talking about If you still have the shifter I would like to buy it

Pistoncan has it right!
Most of the older 3-speeds don't have a mount for a floor shift and all the aftermarket shifters used 3 of the bolts that hold the tailshaft to the main trans case.
You need to use new bolts that are 1/4" longer.
I have a bunch of 60/66 Chevy trucks that were done this way and my 57 was once this way.

3 speed shifter

I look and I have two of them and they do mount to the tail shaft just add 1/4" longer bolts, Ill send you some pictures and let me know which one you need. One is a fenton and the other is a indy that has shifter bolts for the handle if you need to adjust the tilt front or rear on it so it dont hit your seat and I have a Mr. Gasket shifter handle with tee knob on it.
