I came across a 64(assuming it's original to the car) "P" case (Complete rear end) in the local boneyard. I already have a 62 P case w/3:36 ratio... just wondering to us 55-64 and up to 62 vette guys- what is the real world going rate on these lately? I know some guys really need to see that "P"under their car.... not talking about EBay prices. I'm going to assume the whole unit would need a rebuild. I know what is available new. Anybody?
I haven't looked at Ebay prices lately, but at one time they were pretty much in line with the market. Look at completed listings to cull out the overpriced stuff.
The big problem with Ebay is the unscrupulous will sell junk as OK since there's not much way to check it out.
I saw two at the Louisville spring swap meet. One was $450 and the other was $475. Both complete. One was 4:11 and the other I believe was 3:70. Both looked good but who knows.........?
I guess I'm debating if I should rescue this before it gets crushed. Not sure if I'd use it. But I'd rather see someone make use of it. And to figure if it's worth my time and money. Assuming it's original to this particular 64... it probably had a pretty easy life behind the 6cyl/powerglide car. Probably 3:08 or 3:36 gear...
That is not always there either. I parted a 64 Belair a few years back that was an ex police car. It had a 300 HP 327 in it and a "P" case posi. I knew the history of the car since new and it never had any reason for panel replacement. There was no lube sticker or signs it ever had one yet it had a date code matching "P" case.
if it is a corvette p case and not a passenger car one the vet guys go crazy i know of one that was sold, out of a vet for 600 and it was just the ham not a complete rear
I couldn't read the dates or numbers. But I know it's the tall, thin P. I'm not really knowledgeable about the slight differences between the size of the "P" or other variations. I think the earliest ones had an "x" on them or something. Also no tag that I saw.
All the 3rd member housings including posi had a code stamped on the case on the passenger side approximately mid height. If it's all original it will tell you where it was assembled, it will have a date code, and it will have a code for the gear ratio. This is stamped, not cast. The numbers on the driver side are cast (raised).
If you can clean this area with a wire brush and post the info, we can break it down.
If this is a complete axle in a salvage yard or on a parts car, what is the asking price? Without knowing more, I'd say it's worth a lowball offer if you want to mess with a whole axle.
Keep in mind that any posi pieces may have been worked on, abused, gear ratios swapped, etc. over the years.
I follow the ebay listings for the P cases and the asking price has been exorbitant in the 700-1200 bare. As far as I can tell, the only ones that actually sell are the ones that are priced reasonably. I also follow Craig's list (I am looking to rebuild another posi so I keep my eye out for something reasonable) and they seem to be in the 400-700 range complete. Same deal, only the reasonably priced seem to sell (of course I am always a few days late on the reasonably priced units, lol)
Yeah, I look on eBay once and awhile. Always keep my eyes out for 55-64 diffs. I might go back to see if I can determine the ratio on this unit and pick it this weekend. Too bad they aren't up to par with the Pontiac/Olds rear end of the same era.
It's the p case that is actually worth having these days, not the posi itself, unless you want a four series posi. But like I said, those that are selling them are asking more then a few dollars for them.
If you don't have the dollars for a p case, just modify a regular open case.
As for the posi, there are three different versions offered new these days, all around 500. So what Gary says about being skinned is true with these old posi units. If the side gears are worn out, or the cross shafts and spiders are shot, it's like 300 plus just for replacements. Add another hundred for new clutches and you have pretty close to the money for a new posi in just parts to rebuild an old posi so the used pos unit you get has to be in excellent excellent shape, needing at most clutches, in order for it to be a good deal. Otherwise just get a new eaton, auburn or Dana reproduction.
