I realize this may be a dumb question, but has anyone ever converted the fresh air inlets in a 57 headlight ring into a fresh air scoop for the engine??

I tried that on my '57 when it was a race car. I used an air cleaner off of a mid '80's Chevy Pickup, the tall one. Ducted into it from both sides. Car ran the same et. with or without the air cleaner assembly on, but it would not run without an air filter element. Neat looking, but from what I found there is nothing there as far as performance gain.
