I read somewhere, not here, about a guy who was making clips you could put on the wiper cables to take out the slack. Anybody know about these clips or other alternatives? Not wanting to change over to an after market system at this time.

Most auto parts stores use to sell cable adjusters, but I'm not sure they still do. I am currently using one on my emergency brake cable. It is basically a V shaped piece of metal with a threaded hook bolt in the middle. You run the cable over the two edges of the V and then attach the hook to the cable and tighten the threaded hook down which shortens the cable. If your handy at fabricating you can make your own. Or maybe some of our vendors may sell replacement parts. I know Classicchevy.com sells replacement wiper transmissions with new cables.

If a wiper cable stretched, I'm pretty sure it's going to break in the near future. Have you tried tightening them by pushing in on the wiper arm shaft? If so, the clutch on the wiper transmission may be sticking or the spring between the pulleys is broken. Is the bracket on the transmissions, tight?

Don is correct. The wiper cable tension is set by the wiper transmissions. When you depress the wiper arm shaft the cable gets slack when it is released they tighten. When the transmissions age they get rusty and fail to operate. They may need to be rebuilt. Try soaking them with penetrating oil and push on the shafts to see if they free up and remove the slack in the cable.
