I went to a title agency yesterday to get a duplicate title. Now keep in mind that the state already has all the information and all they have to do is put some information into a computer and a new title is printed..
Which they did,then charged $93.75..

I asked the lady behind the counter why the State of Florida charges $93.75 for a piece of paper. Her answer was "because they can".
We cannot mention politics here so I will try to explain the situation in this state w/out it becoming a political post.
We were promised "no new t****" but no-one said No new fees...........Registrations,licenses,duplicate titles and all dmv fees have more than doubled.
Plus even though I have been driving for 47 years, when I renew my drivers license,I have to provide a birth certificate,Social security card, two copies of utility bills billed to my address, two picture IDs and more than double the money that I paid the last time I renewed the license.

OF I hear your pain,

It costs me $6 bucks to get in the state park, and $25 bucks for a fishing license... for 31 bucks I'm better off buying some fillets from the supermarket,....ahhh, but then I wouldn't be dropping a few more bucks on a bunch of new fishing gear. Heaven help you if you want to hunt or fish out of state.

I recently went through the same challenge getting a new title. Its amazing to me the increase in "fees" in just the past 15 years. You can't win

Your not alone it happens everywhere...feel the frustration myself everytime I renew...they can't raise taxes by law so they tack on fees:frown:...and the interminable wait at the DMV... ridiculous...place is crowded, only 2 counters open and you see more than a half dozen workers standing around seemingly just gabbing or not doing anything...Irksome at the least

Fred, whatever you do, do NOT go to your state's DMV website and see how many cars, trucks, motorcycles and drivers are registered, and multiply it by the apropriate fees - you'll have a heart attack!! Then throw in said title fees for printing a 50 cent document, and how about 'sales tax'?? Here in PA, no matter how many times a car is sold, it's 6% sales tax. Then they want to toll the roads.

Last year Ohio tacked on a $20 fee if you do NOT re-new your license plates within 7 days of your B-day.

I made a fuss and was told if I didn't like it, I could write the state representative. I did. And.... got the run-a-round from him. He also never bothered to respond to my second email explaining not all Ohio citizens can afford an extra $20 to get their car re-newed for the upcoming year. I guess he figured anyone in that situation didn't deserve to drive anyway.

This added fee came on the heals of a rate increase from the Ohio BMV on all driver's and auto licenses.
ex. my custom plate on my 2006 Monte Carlo was $70. It's now $80/year.

 Guys you have not had a wait in line experience at the DMV unless you live in SoCal. Most offices are only open Monday thru Thursday so you've only got 4 days to get things taken care of.

My wife had to get her drivers license renewed about a month ago, she also had to take the writen drivers test.
We had scheduled an appointment for 9am, got her there around 8:15am. There were over 350 people in line outside of the building ahead of her when we got there! Inside there was probrably another 100 or so. Even with her
"9am appointment" she still did not get out of there until almost 3pm. Needless to say she was not a happy camper.

Took her out to dinner and had a couple of glasses of wine.

She said next time she will just drive without a license rather than go through that again !!!!

Here in the San Joaquin Valley, they want to add $13 to each registration for polution caused by businesses. They don't want to scare away businesses so are going to charge those that pay registration fees on their vehicles.

Wow - used to be that if you did not expire you just had to send them the renewal - every 8-12 years they would require eye test and re-identify with a personal visit. I never had to take but one written and one behind wheel in over 20 years. That sux that she had to test (but then again seeing how the majority of folks drove last time I visited - maybe everyone should have to retest both written AND behind wheel EVERY YEAR!!!!!!!)

I hear the pain - but think about the other side of it as well. Every year I get the complaint about my pricing increases - yet every year my rent goes up, my utilities, labor expense, education expense, insurance, payroll tax, property tax, cost of paper and operating supplies - EVERY EXPENSE LINE ON MY P&L - goes up. the only way to stay in balance is to increase the income lines as well!

I guess everyone expects that someone else (namely me) will pay these increases - to the point that if I had not raised fees in just the last ten years - I would now be loosing 15 dollars per client and not only would I not get a paycheck - my commisioned employees would be paid below minimum, have no health insurance options and I would have to get a another job just to keep my business going - basically PAYING for clients to use my services and still meet minimum wage laws - and that would still leave my personal expenses (house, utils and food) unpaid! I ain't in business to pay for others - I am in it to make my money!

Those DMV clerks get paid as well as the beaurocrats that manage them. And they have the same overhead increases the rest of us see as well. I just don't know where the answer lays.

I totally agree with what you say, I was a business owner and my fees had to go up to stay in business, yet those DMV clerks(gov't employees) are there to help and are being paid(very well here in CO, comparatively) to perform a job and when you have only two counters open to help maybe 50-75 people or more and the rest of the clerks are just standing around doing what looks like nothing...well it is no wonder why people get ****** off about the increase in fees, the waiting and everything. If I had run my business the way most gov't entities do I would not have been in business for very long...nor would you. Another thing at least in our DMV office some of the clerks are very arrogant, like if you ask a question they act like it is to much effort to seek an answer or you are imposing upon them...IMO they are no different than any other employee or the people they are there for the purpose to help settle licensing/titiling issues...they are not privelaged just because they work for the State of CO DMV....customer service is customer service period

All this DMV torture is why I have AAA towing. As a AAA member I can take care of all registration issues, everything except my driver's license issues in their peaceful office filled with friendly folks that smile. Also I found a person that does DMV work for auto dealers and old car folks and for a small fee, she will charge into the DMV and resolve any problems.

Scarry thing is that this BS is happening all over the country now, not just here on the left coast.

Cheers, it's Friday

DMV and Veterans

Be advised guys.....If any of you are Vets and have a Purple Heart or are Disabled you are entitled to a discounted Auto License Fee. At least that's the way it is here in W.Va.......

But you have to ask.

Customer service is a whole different topic (or rather lack thereof) - as I tell my people - knowledge of the treasury code and the profession itself don't mean squat if you don't/can't wow the client with service skills! Most people don't mind paying premium price for premium service. After all we like to feel important and somewhat cared for - it's paying premium price for indifference that gets real annoying.

I can see the similarity between the DMV, the IRS and even the services that are there to help you through these tasks - and Its hard to be positive when the people that come in are already irritated that they even have to be there in the first place! There ten billion things they'd rather be doing - even LAUNDRY is a better alternative! Some of them even hate you for it - and it's obvious. It is extremely difficult to not let that effect the next client and into a snowball effect.
