about 500 miles ago, i put in the ACCEL "SUPER STOCK" coil,[42,000 volts], #45 AC plugs, at .035 gap. i put in AUTOLITE, AR 73, opened the gap to .045. Would this have killed the coil? now i installed, a Davis Unified Ignition, [D.U.I.], canister type coil. [50,000 volts], and i brought the gap down to.042. the instructions say to set them at .045, but i`m just concerned if opening the gap can kill the coil?? THANX!! anxious for some info on this.

I don't think the plug gap will affect it. I just put new plugs in my daughters car. The plugs were supposed to be at .042". All of the plugs were worn to over .085" and the one that started missing with an error code was over .100". The center electrode had worn even with the insulator on it. I'm sure they had been over .050" for 50 or 60 thousand miles.

yea, that`s true. old plugs, worn plugs, get a bigger gap. however, forgot to mention, it was mounted horizontally. ya know, it seems to be a little quicker, responsive with the new coil.

Coil placement

In a earlier coil death question i mention about mounting the coil vertically. but forgot to mention coil placement. All electronics can be affected by heat soak ( gets heat from sitting after engine shut off.) I have seen other electronic boxes damaged because they were mounted to close to the headers or straight above them on the fender panel. MSD boxes seem to be hurt by this the most often.:anim_25:

In respose to question about big gaps killing coils. back in 76-77 I had a 442 olds and I believe the plug gaps were .060 back then with stock Hei distributor with accel internal coil
