Ran across this film on You Tube. Didn't know movies were around back then. It is thought to be The Army of Northern Virginia advancing through Maryland prior to the Battle of Gettysburg. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAiG1ml3itk

flim clip

This may be a clip from the movie--Birth of a Nation. The first motion cameras were not developed until the late 1880's

Thanks for posting that. I love civil war stuff. It amazes me why they went through what they did. I will never understand it. One of the first major battle was at Shilo. Blood was running into the water and they through bodies into ravines and buried them. Why didn`t they just call it off ? I could understand it if they were fighting over trifives. :sign0020:bowtie-trifive:gba:

It is suppose to be authentic American Civil War footage shot by French experimental photographer and inventor Leon-Alexander Canular (1810-1896) using a single lens camera that he had devised, It is one of the earlest examples of motion picture and the first with war as the subject matter. Shot at 16-18 frames per second, only photographic copies of parts of the paper filmstrip exist today.

My best guess, time laps photography put together for the movie. However, a quick research from some specialist in the field cry hoax. It's been discovered that it was taken from another u tube reenactment - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&v=KXGDv5INB-4&NR=1 and modified to look old.
Yep same group The woman walking at the side is wearing the same outfit. besides that, the group as a whole is way overfed. Those guys were lean!

Wish it was original, which would be very cool to have such early footage of anything that early, but just as Nick pointed out, it looks like a hoax...

Look at the link Nick posted, and go the 1:30 mark...same...
