If only I could put something like this in my garage and not think about it while it charges overnight.
Scary...I've also heard of similar situations with battery tenders.

Anything electronic has the possibility of going up in smoke. Well that could be a stretch, I doubt a little battery would have enough juice to make something burn. Things like battery tenders, I try to leave on the concrete floor or something else that won't burn, but too often I don't.
I don't mean to downplay the dangers of Lith Ion batteries, they certainly tend to cause catastrophic fires more than any other type of battery.

When Snap on first came out with rechargeable drills a guy I know had charged his new one up and was taking it home from the shop to use to put new hardware on his kitchen cabinets. Not thinking, he laid it in the back seat of his new extended cab Chevy. For some reason it overheated and got hot enough to actually burn through the seat cover and imprint itself in the foam padding. Lot of smoke and a new rear seat bottom. SnapOn paid. I don't trust a lot of things rechargeable. I only charge my phone at night on a glass top night stand by my bed.

Personally, I won a set of DeWalt tools as a door prize once. ,18V drill, flashlight and 6" circular saw. came with charger and 2 batteries. I was excited. Brought them home and plugged in the charger and stuck a battery in it overnight on wooden top work bench in shed. Wen out the next morning and it had overheated and melted the battery into the charger and a black spot on workbench top. I got lucky. I got online to find out there had been a recall on this problem. I called DeWalt and they immediately sent me a brand new complete kit like I had and even included a reciprocating saw. Can't beat that for service.

I would assume that was back when the cordless stuff was all Ni-Cad.
