as some of you know i changed the 350 to a 700r4 and the 256 open to a 342 posi, now i was told it would make a major difference in acceleration etc,so when it was finished i was a little disappointed in the throttle response, and when ever i stepped on the peddle it would jump no matter how easily i pushed on the peddle ,so i took it to yet another mechanic who is known for working on sbcs and after adjusting the kick down cable, and linkage the dad burned car almost leaves the road man you talk bout faster ,but the problem is when i accelerate and it shifts for the first time it really jumps ,[kind of throws you back a little and the wife does not like this nor do i] when i step on it from start it will chirp the tires as soon as it does the first shift, the next 2 shifts are realitivly smooth[i have a shift kit]now can i correct this by putting a little less tension on the kick down cable at the carb???the mechanic is also telling me he can get me more response by changing the weights and springs in the distributor, and fine tunning the carb with some kind of meter???? what are your guys thoughts on this ??and i will admit the car [except for the jump]has never run sogood

:blowtiedb:

Relieve the tension on the Throttle Valve cable about 1/16".
This will help a lot on that hard 1-2 shift.

You should start with the cable all the way out at WOT. Then you can fine tune it from there. The only way is to drive test it after small increment changes.

BTW make sure if you have a "split" cable (that is one with adjustment screw collar about midway down the cable). Make sure it is tight on the Ferrell. They can slip if not tight and that is what causes a lot of problems with peoples 700R4 transmissions.
A good transmission tech will prefer a cable without the split.

I leave the trans adjustments to a pro. But this is what he told me about the 700r4 I just installed (without a shift kit).

He set the trans for mechanical lock up (no electronics)
Set the pressures for fairly smooth shifting
Shift points set at approx. 15-20 and again at 28-32 (final adjustments to be made when car is one the road)

Kickdown cable must be set at correct distance from carb. and the CARB MUST HAVE THE CORRECT 700R4 ADDTIONAL BRACKET INSTALLED (on a Holley 465) for proper geometry to control pressures and shift points.

I will get it drivable and then he will come and fine tune it.

Had to fabricate a new shift lever last night as the one we had, had too short of a throw. The new one is 1" longer and should allow for easier operation of shifting and better shift indicator position.

As for tuning the carb with a meter. I assume you have either a Quadrajet or Edlebrock carb. Both of these require changing metering rods and other spec adjustments for better throttle response.

I would have a tranny specialist make his checks and adjustments before doing much more to the carbs.

Hey Don,
Glad to hear it worked out for you.:)
A little cable adjustment goes a long way with shift improvement.
