Works until it doesn't and then you are screwed if you run out of gas. Seen it happen before.
You can say that about anything @55wagoncrazy - It works until it doesn't...
Doesn't everything "work until it doesn't?"
That's why I've got a custom 27-gallon fuel cell.

I agree with Mikey.. it's an unnecessary 'complication' just to be 'cutesy'... WHY?
Why @BamaNomad ?? Because I like it.

I think its neat.
And it gives you the option of removing the gas door on the quarter panel for a smooth look.
Thanks @SeeTheUSA !! I think it's neat too.
The stock 55 gas door was covered up last year, but the dumb-ass painter never installed the Rocky Hinge device so I had to open and close the tail-light to get access to the gas cap with a screwdriver. And... to add insult to injury - the gas cap didn't seal the gas tank so whenever I filled-up it would leak gas out of the back. I even got black-flagged at Sonoma Raceway because it was leaking fuel!!
Uncle Twist...Here's another idea...See post #9 here: Rocky Hinge 55 tail light
Very cool @Pops @ Tri-5.com !! I like what you did - improvise and overcome!!
But... my Rocky Hinge super secret gas door is already installed.

Another $$$ gadget that hat has no real advantage. Only benefit is eliminating the gas door in the quarter for a custom. Cheaper options for the above as well as any perceived fuel anti-theft benefit.
You're right @zookpr - it doesn't have any real advantage.
But it sure is cool and I like it - and that's what matters right?

Regret I missed the part about it already being installed...I wish you well with yours..(Not being sarcastic)
All good @Pops @ Tri-5.com !! The video showed the Rocky Hinge device in action.
Did you watch the video?
And thank you for the well wishes!! I hope to see you out on the open road indoor TriFive!!

Yup...Watched the video...I've known about this mod for some time now...The price for the kit has skyrocketed (like everything else) over the past few years: 1955 Chevy Taillight Conversion Kit
Thanks for the support @Pops @ Tri-5.com !!
I've known about it for years too and I finally pulled the trigger.
Now I've got one of my very own.
Would you do me a favor?
Gimme a like & subscribe to my YouTube channel if you haven't already.
I'd appreciate it

I like the stock design of a 56 better, my taillight is over 65 years old and works like new. none of this push button electronic crap will be working when its that old. Just like the transfer case shifter in my 72 Blazer that still works, push button ones fail regularly.
I like the stock design of the 56 too @mr55/56 but I don't like the look of the 56 tail light.
I like the 55 tail light better.
There's a manual over-ride just in case the "push button electronic crap" fails.
All the best to you

I've been installing them for some time now and have never had one fail. Rocky Hinge does a very good job of building these units, they are very high quality, easy to install and adjust and THEY JUST PLAIN WORK. I love the way they clean up the quarter on a 55. They are a bit pricey but you get what you pay for. For those of you that don't like them, no worries, you don't have to buy one. The small trick items installed on a classic for me just makes it a bit more unique...JMO. :)
Thanks for the positive feedback @lostn50s !!
I agree with you - it just makes it a bit more unique - just the way I like it.
The Rocky Hinge unit is a nice piece - I'll keep you posted on how it works.
Thanks again for the support.

This thread got me to thinking all my late model junk has a fuel door, very similar to my 55, even my Moms Caddy which has no gas cap.
None of that push button electronic crap for you right @mr55/56 ?!?
Absolutely the only answer that matters. Otherwise go get a suburban or some nasty little crossover thing.
Thanks for the positive feedback @iquitos46 !!
I think it's cool so I'm putting it on The 55.
I'd love a 72 3-door suburban with an LSX454, a little lift and some 33's... Maybe 35's
Thanks again

I came up with a simpler solution to eliminate my 55 fuel door. Works every time as long as the trunk opens.
Very cool @55 Rescue Dog !!
You've just gotta be careful to not spill any gasoline all over your trunk.
And hopefully you don't have any of that push button electronic crap to open the trunk either.
Thanks for the feedback!!
Uncle Twist
Not sure why there is so much negativity. Complex solution to a simple problem? Perhaps. But it’s clever and cool and this whole hobby is about doing things out of want and interest rather than necessity.
Thanks so much for the positive words @Postman57 !!
I don't know why there's so much negativity either.
Apparently I hit a nerve with the TriFive.com community.
But no matter what they write - I think it's cool!!
Thanks again

I watched the video and they are very cool! I'm glad that Rocky Hinge is a quality company. I'm sure they stand behind their product.
But to Mikey's original point, I am curious about what you do if it ever does fail? Maybe this was addressed and I somehow missed it?

My body shop guy was not gung ho to shave my door handles, door locks and trunk locks, for the simple fact that eventually the relays might fail or the key fob thingy to open them has a dead battery. I wanted all this stuff shaved for the same reasons as you getting this cool gas door, - because it's cool! However, safeguards were built it to the car. Most guys who shave their doors have a hidden door popper somewhere if their key fob thing fails. I have a third way to get into the car if my key fob fails and then my door popper fails. A secret pull cable.

I'm just wondering what redundancy you have built-in to allow you to manually gain access to your gas filler, should the worst case scenario happen?
Thanks @Lukie !! I think it's cool too.
Exactly!! Just like the C7 Corvettes - they have a hidden cable in the trunk to pop open the door if the actuator fails.
I've got a build in manual over ride too just in case.
Thanks for your support!!

Here is the 90-degree filler neck I used inside my trunk, and it was like $60, I think. Yes, I have to be careful not to overfill it or too fast, and keep a towel under it, but the threaded O-ring cap seals tight and doesn't leak.
That's awesome @55 Rescue Dog !!
Thanks again for sharing!!
I have seen those for a few years. Might even consider one in the future. There seems to be a large amount of stories pro and con. It is cool but for anyone to know it is there you have to show them, and that feels a little needy.
I've seen em for years too @Robert Haas
I thought it was cool the first time I saw it and when The 55 had to get painted I pulled the trigger and got one.
Aren't there pro & con stories about everything??
LS's / Turbos / Blowers / Power Windows... everything has a pro & a con.
Why do you think it "feels a little needy?"
How do I find you there? I plugged "Uncle Twist" into their search engine and came up empty.
Sorry about that @Pops @ Tri-5.com
Go to www.youtube.com/jeffthisted
And thank you for the support!!
Uncle Twist
Because the only way anyone will ever know it is there, is for you to show it to them. It looks stock, and unless you show it off ...does that make sense?

If it makes you happy to fire it up and watch it wiggle everytime you put fuel in your car, then it is doing what you paid for.
I don't want or need anyone to know it's there @Robert Haas
I did it because I like it.
No offense - but I don't care what anyone else thinks about it...
And I'm not doing it to show it off to anyone either.
Last year I drove over 21,000 miles, 19 states and 16 car shows - I think 2 people asked me "where's the gas door?"
Most people don't know - and if they do know they pass right by it because it's hidden in plain sight.
I've also got a few hidden switches & things on the car that no one needs to know about but me.
If that seems needy to you, then I guess I'm needy.
