This might be a good time to find out what I have. If anybody wants to decode the engine that came from my 57, I know its not original but was told it was possibly a 58 corvette motor. Block casting number is 3737739 and number on front right deck is F424D. Valve covers still on so I don't have the head numbers but the covers are the finned corvette aluminum. It does have the carter 4barrel but this was an original dual exhaust car and likely had the power pack so The carb and intake may be original.
Just to flesh out this thread: From NCRS pocket spec guide...
1958 Corvette block casting should be: 3737739 cast no. (also early '59)
1958 Corvette Head casting nos should be: 3748770 ** should have X58 on side of head. and staggered valve cover holes.
1958 Corvette serial numbers range from: J58S100001 TO J58S109168
(1026 of these were built with Fuel Injected engines). FI engine suffixes for 1958 included:
CR 250 HP, FI, MT
DH 250 HP, FI, PG
CS 290 HP, FI, HI-LIFT cam, MT
PS. THE 'D' suffix engine posted could become a 'DH' by adding an 'H'...
but that engine would probably not have the 770X heads...
