I have a 56 Chevy 210, Townsman, and updating with additional gauges. Under the dash, left side of the steering column, there is a silver cylinder, 4" long and 2" round with two wires coming out of the top. The previous owner does not reminder what it is for. It is mounted over half of the fuse block. I have attached a picture of it, not a great one, but I hope it will help. Any ideals, thanks for any help :)

:) Yup, has to be the wiper motor.

Does your car have a wiper motor on the firewall?
Do your wipers work?

Don't know why it would be where its at unless PO just tied it up under the dash for future use ?????

The raingear wiper system is mounted under the dash and the motor hangs down from the wiper system mounting.

:) I stand corrected, duh, thought all were mounted on the firewall.
It's great that I learned something new today!
