I'm looking for any information that could help me with converting my 56 bel air to front disc brakes, I would like to use parts that I could pick up at my local auto parts store.

The main item you will need is the caliper bracket-I do not think local parts store carry them.I could be wrong about that though. If you get a bracket for large calipers then 72 Monte Carlo calipers, pads and rotors can be found at your local store.

I got my kit from east coast chevy the whole kit was like $450 and had everything I needed including tech support it took me an afternoon to install
calipers, rotors, brake pads, brackets, and the m/c with prop valve and brake lines, wheel bearings the whole 9

I dont think you can beat the price
