i had to replace the brakes on the wifes' 97 mercury and everything went fine until there was a ear shattering sound coming from the right rear wheel, after taking it back apart and just being plain dumbfounded it was discovered that the emergency brake cable was frozen. I discovered this after the wheel cyclinder ruptured and ruined the the new set of shoes. I never ran into this one before

I generally check for the E brake cable being free when doing the rear brakes especially up hear in Rust Central. The police cruisers we work on are generally under 4 years old and we end up replacing these cable before they are 3 years old. Road salt eats up everything here in the Northeast.
