My son asked me to detail his master cylinder for his 57. For his, I used rustoleum metallic silver and then shot real catalyzed auto clear over the whole thing. I liked the look so I decided to use the same paint on mine. This is how my son’s master cylinder came out.

Now I am truly product of the 60s and 70s so there were very few models I built as a kid, or bikes that I had, or even my 57 back in that period that did not have something in metallic, metal flake, mother of pearl, engine turned tape, lol. And so with my long held belief that if a little is good, more has just got to be better, I found a can of silver glitter paint and added even more metallic glitter, lol.

Then mixed up some Urechem clear that I have to use on my son’s car and used a Preval sprayer and sprayed four coats over the whole mess. I will let this dry and harden up for a week or more but here is what it looks like. In the sun, you can really see the metallic.

Yea I am almost embarrassed, almost, lol.
Reading over this post it was mentioned that you didn't think there were any disc brake set ups that would clear 14" Cragars.I ran into this on my buddy's 55 he at the time had just put new tires on the 14" Cragars that were on his 55 when he bought it.I tried to get him to replace them with 15" of some sort but he wasn't ready at that time.Otherwise I would have used a 0 offset style like I had on my own 56 at that time.I ended up ordering the common Chevelle style disc set up from EastCoast old 55 as they said the kit likely would clear some 14" wheels but not all.The set up did clear but was close enough to the inside of the spokes that I added a .090 spacer for around .125 total clearance & that has worked fine for the last 2 years. Now he's ready to change wheels & tires finally. Just thought Id mention it.His car in the photo.

I appreciate the the thought! When I was getting close to having the repairs done on my 57, it was getting pretty close 2015 nationals. Repairs is a pretty loose term as I had to repair or rebuild nearly everything on the car. The budget was getting tight, really tight, so I had to figure out how to get the car to the nationals within budget. So one of the compromises was polishing up my 80s era Cragers and just put new rubber on them so that is what I did.

that being said, this year those tires age out so I am probably going to order some new 15 inch Cragers. Direct drill since they now make them because my back and knees can’t keep muscling the unilugs. i am going to keep the drum brakes, at least for now. The muscle car brake shoes work really well and the car stops fine. But you never know in the future. I might do a disc brake swap. But I am going to wait until I see how my son’s car stops with them. We put the MG 0 off set disc brakes on his car. If it works well, you never know, I might make the swap.

One of the reasons I'm thrilled my friend is planning on replacing the 14" Cragars is the unilug version I hate them but then I hated having to remove & install the 15" unilug Cragars I ran on several of my cars back in the seventies although on two of them they worked one 55 had a 1957 Olds rear axle with olds pattern & another I ran a 8 3/4 Mopar rear.Even though I have a lift today to swap wheels on the unilugs are a big P--- period.

Inasmuch as 68-70 Chevelles and non-Z28 Camaros from 67-69 had a disk brake option with 14 inch wheel how can a spacer be necessary. The 4 piston 67 Camaro caliper is much bigger than CHevelle. They are so big I had to run spacers to run 15 inch Supertricks with them. The spacers were no longer required when I went to 69 D54 calipers on my SS350.

Kind of sorry to see you upgrading to a dual master as I really like and respect the different approach you have with your car. The polar opposite of another Stage Coach wheeled ugly plastic engine covered car with a space ship interior.

Lol. believe me, I would not be making the change but for my boys. They worry about me so I think I can put my stubbornness aside and accommodate their request (demand), lol.

you are too kind regarding my car. It’s been this way a very long time now and I like it.

Here it is about 79/80

We learned about the advantages of a dual reservoir master cylinder first used by Rambler in Big Daddy Haas auto shop class in the 70s. Yes they are better and safer than single pots. But if the single pot was as dangerous as some on here preach non of our cars would be left as they would have crashed before the dual was mandated by the Highway Safety Act that went into effect in 67.

I like the idea of the dual master cylinder but around 2008 when I did a frame off on my 1965 Corvette I opted for a new original single master cylinder along with every other piece of the braking system also being new it stayed that way for the next 10 years I owned the car.I really had no concern about that system. There was improvements though such as all 4 calipers having stainless sleeves & stainless lines.

the single pot is safe IF and I mean IF you inspect your car regularly and make sure any hoses , wheel cylinders and or calipers aren't leaking. Of course even a new hose or wheel cylinder can break but most times if you're paying attention you'll notice a problem from a leak in time to repair it. Same applies to dual cylinder also.

I remember having another 65 Corvette back around 1969 not that old a car at the time common problem with brake calipers sucking air into the system causing low pedal but you always knew something wasn't right before you had no brakes, that was before stainless sleeved calipers came out.We just had to buy new caliper half's & rebuild them.

Now I think I am getting carried away. I polished up the original lid and sprayed a little clear on it but when I installed it, it just was not doing it for me. Snooped around the internet and came up with a new chrome plated lid and bail retainer.

I think this looks a little better. Gonna have to get a couple of coats of wax on this. My guess is it will rust the moment it hits the outside air, lol. But maybe I can stave that off for a little while.
