Hello, Don from Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada here. Finally got my 55 Del Ray home been in storage since January, I was moving. I have a question, the guy I bought it from said it has a 350 in it. No expert, but it looks small for a 350 to me. Is there any stampings on the block that will tell me what engine it is. I am also icluding some pics if that will help. Thx, Don in Canada.

A 350 looks just like a 283 and all inbetween there are numbers on the block dr.side behind the head 6 or 7 degit from that you can tell what you have. Before I get into trouble the location of the dip stick will somtimes tell you also but those numbers will be your best bet

The 327 and 350 engines have a 4" bore. Put a tape measure across yours. If the size is smaller then it's NOT a 327/350. All others had a 3 7/8" bore or smaller.

The serial # of the engine is located on the front of the engine block, on the passenger side, just below where the head bolts onto the block. You can probably find an answer to that # by posting it on here. Someone will have a book to decode those numbers.

He might not want to pull a head to do this. Looks like it is running.

Here's the bores for all Gen 1 production small block Chevys:

262 - 3.67" bore
265 - 3 3/4"
305 - 3.736"
283, 307 - 3 7/8"
302, 327, 350 - 4"
400 - 4 1/8"
