Hi, I have a 61 Bel Air and I am trying to figure if the motor is non original.

It has a 2 bbl manifold with the casting # 3746826. From what I can tell that is a 1957 manifold.

The stamping on the front of the engine is F053IE. This is very confusing. The F should be Flint. Because it only has 3 numbers, I would think it is a 57 or 58 block. Would it be May 3rd. I would have thought that would be 503. Also I can only find the IE suffix as listed on a late 60s big block.

This is clearly a small block. I wasn't able to easily see the block casting buried in the back. It is at the body shop for a month. I thought I would ask and see if anybody had an idea. The stamping number is baffling.

Very simple, my friend. That's May 31, engine code E. E was used for 2bbl w/turboglide 283's from 1958-62
I wondered if that might be but the digit after the 3 is clearly an I. there is a cap on the top and bottom of the vertical line. It is possible that the worker that day misidentified or was missing the 1 and just used the I instead. Do you think that is likely?

I clearly need the casting number from the block. The intake manifold has the 3746826. I found one listing showing that as a 57 and another that said 58-62.

Not a mistake, that's the way they stamped them. You probably have the orig 283.
I believe that intake casting to be correct for 1956-1963 2 bbl. Your dates on the block and intake will tell you if they're orig to your 61.
Replace that with a 409!

F053IE =
F = flint mich engine plant
05 = May
3I = 31st day of the month (the capital I is what Chevy used as a 1)
E = '57 thru '63 283, 185 - 170 horse power depending on the year.

the 3746826 intake is '58 - '61

so you need to read the casting dates............

Thanks Classic Gary. That means I still have hope that it is the original engine.

The VIN is11669K167191. I have decoded through the K for Kansas City.

1 = 1961
16 = Bel Air 1600 series V-8
69 = 4 dr sedan
K = Kansas City
167191 = serial number starting with 100001

Is there a resource that will tell me what month the 167191st car was built? Was this the 167,191th car built in Kansas City or was it nationwide?

I'm afraid there is no hope it's the original engine to your '61. It's a '56 265 CI block, the intake could be from 1958 to 1963... you need to tell us what the cast date is on the intake, that will tell you when it was cast. :tu
The member that posted he has a 3720991 block is not the O/P.
