how big (long) can a fan spacer be?? i have adjusted and adjusted but the fan just nicks the shroud when i first star the engine and if i hit a bump---i have an 1.5 inch spacer and if i could go a little futher the fan would be inside the shroud and not touch a thing

The fan should not be entirely inside the shroud. It needs to be half in and half out. If it is all the way inside the shroud it creates turbulence within the shroud. You need air to be pull through the core and out the back of the shroud. Space it accordingly. If your hitting the shroud perhaps you could raise or lower the shroud to clear the fan. If all else fails maybe a smaller diameter fan.

What kind of material is the shroud made from? Where did you get it?

How big is the opening and how big is your fan?

Is the fan too big for the shroud or is it off center?
