My 'roun town' pickemup ride, 99 Ranger, 6 cyl 3.0 flex fuel, 100,000 miles, decided to regurgitate some teeth on the oil pump drive shaft, damaging the cam and who knows what else. Had to get it towed to Furd dealer so they could tell me what I was afraid to hear-$$$$. Labor alone 16 hours to get into it and 12 hours back together, new or reman engine 2-3 thousand.

It's an "extra" vehicle, can live without it. probably only worth 3K even when running, but I've had it awhile, kids drove it, etc.

My options:

Tow it back to my place and "plan" on fixing it myself, who knows when--priority is my 57 BelAir.

Junk Yard

Or, seems like the young Furd mechanic is interested in taking it off my hands for ??? He told me he doesn't "have a lot of money" The kid can fix it for himself a lot cheaper than I could, already has a head start.

WHAT TO DO???

While discussing the future of this truck with the "kid" and another technician who's been around for close to 30 years (and decided to tell me that he hasn't seen this part fail before--huh?) I was realy shocked to find out that he was working on Commission! I couldn't believe it. Is this the norm at dealerships nowadays?

Yes, it's pretty common.

One thing I would suggest, if you really rather not keep the truck perhaps you could donate it and get a break on your taxes. My brother did so and technically got more than what he could have sold the car for outright.

To donate I thought it had to be running and the value would be whatever they sell it for? seems tough to determine. anyway I'd probably 'donate' to the kid if it came to that.

And, what's a fair price for the 'kid' to pay if it came to that??? been accused of being jaded or cynical once in awhile, but seem to have a soft heart for some things.

Hey MpBelair, As you probably know, Trucks can be very handy for a home-owner. There has been many times I wish I had one when bringing supplies back from lumber stores. I chose to pay a little extra for delivery because there would often be months where I would not need one.
If you can live without a truck, and you and your family got your moneys worth out of it, I say sell it to the kid. In the past I've tried to keep vehicles on life support to long. After I put X amount of dollars in a vehicle, and something else goes wrong, you feel committed to put more money into it. Only you know your situation and what the real condition of the truck is now. Me, I'd sell it to the kid, buy the wife a little something nice, and keep a little chunk of that money for your next project on your 57. Good Luck!

Hey its an old truck right, what about simply looking for a used replacement engine. THat wouldn't be 3 grand and an engine swap is a lot less involved than what the dealer wants to do to the current engine. If you get a couple years out of it great.

My guess is your looking to sell for probably the cost of putting a replacement (used) engine in it so maybe its 6's.

Good luck, depends how bad you want to hold onto the truck, I find I use an old hauler more often than not.

I think you did the right thing ! I'm in Tulsa and have old trucks for sale pretty cheap all the time, I sold a 95 Mitsubishi truck yesterday for a $1000 that ran good and had cold air. Keep me in mind if you need a replacement.

Put the ball in the kids court and ask him, "What do you think is fair?" Later, Dave
