My 55 fuel gauge reads 1/8 tank when key is on. Tank overflowing with fuel or empty. I removed the sender wire and with key on wire not grounded. Gauge reads full. Sender wire grounded key turned on. It reads 1/8 tank. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Sounds like the guage is reading correctly.

The brass float would be my guess, may have a crack and filled with fuel.

There is a ton on the subject look out for a ford brass float from a mustang 1964 to 1970 :anim_25:

The float is probably cracked and full of fuel. It should read zero when grounded, so the gauge may be out of calibration or you have a bad connection at the rear harness plug or at the gauge. Ground the brown wire at the gauge and see if it goes to empty.
