Danchuk (and others) sell replacement harness' to use with an alternator as opposed to a generator. I used one of theirs and as I recall it bypasses the voltage regulator but still has the generator light funtion on the instrument panel.
I used a GM alternator that has one main lug and a two prong plug that the harness plugged right into on the side of the alternator.
I think it is pretty simple to modify your existing wiring as well and someone will probably jump in with that solution.
