I just swapped out the stock 3.55 geared rear for a 10 bolt with 2.41 gears from a 79 Camaro. I took it out on the highway for a test run and did not want to come back home. :happy0030: I must have had a bad bearing in the old stock rear cause its so quiet now, I can hear the radio! :D I got up to 85 and the engine still sounded hardly worked. Drastic change and now I can hit the turnpike saturday and pass everybody :party0031:

I used to have a 69 427 Caprice that had a 2.29 gear. When I first put it together and drove it, I thought something was drastically wrong. It seemed like it wouldn't shift into high gear LOL. But what a cruiser it loved 80-90mph. I raced a Porsche on the Will Rogers Turnpike one time, I have no real idea how fast I went but the tach was at about 4800rpm when I took my foot out of it. The gas guage was going down faster than the tach was going up.

I'm running 2:78 gears and at 60 mph, I pull it back into 2nd gear and nail it, it is almost scary sometimes. A turbo 400 is in front of the gears, a good setup. And fun, but these cars weren't designed for speed, guess that's what makes them exciting to drive. Cruised in last night, got one tonight, and a BIG one Saturday nite. Fun, fun, fun. Very common gear in cars like 77 Olds Cutlass,TAs and low perf Camaros of that era. About 1900 rpm @ 65 with a G70/15. My sister still has a Cutlass so equiped, my Mom bought it new 275,000 later it still shifts into high at 85mph @WOT. This is how fuel economy was done in the late 70s @80s before OD.

I've got the same rear sitting in my yard (but from a 79 Trans Am). Posi, 2.41, leaf spring and traction bars. Been trying to sell it for months. No luck yet. Bet it would sail out on the freeway. I couldn't use it because of my overdrive.

What does a 2.41, for example, do for performance on the low end? Sounds great for highway cruising  but what is the trade off when driving in town?
You must be young enough to not remember the late 70s. Cars like the Trans Am were equipped with 2.41 & 2.56 were great top emd cars but sluggish off the light. You can expect the same now.

I am LOVING this rear end swap! I'm going to get on the turnpike tomorrow and head for Miami, OKLA. There is a car show going on. I've drove the heck out of the car today but can't wait to stretch her legs on a long straight highway. I'll take pics at the show and post em up tomorrow evening.

I had 2.56 in a Pontiac GP with TH400 trans, it was a slug out of the hole but would do 110 in second gear... Speedo only went to 140 and I had it way past that...
