A customer brought his car in for a tune up and I noted that the Holley Street Avenger 770cfm carburetor still had its clear plastic float bowl level sight hole plugs installed, I said to him that this is not recommended and went to remove the primary one and it fell of in my fingers. So I tried the secondary one - did the same, so I had to remove the carburetor to get the fuel bowls off, because the plastic had gone so brittle it was locked into the back of the thread and could not be removed. Once the float bowls were off, I was able to carefully drill them out and remove the residue, I then fitted the proper brass plugs and refittted everything.
A bit of a lesson here, don't leave them in place. It meant a 5 min job turned into an hour and new gaskets to boot.

On boy..I'm running the 670 Street Avenger and believe the plastic plugs are still installed. I don't recall seeing anything in the Holly literature instructing me to remove them. Were the brass plugs included with the carb at the time of purchase? I guess I better have a look at this now.

I just re-read the Holley literature and still don't see where it says the clear sight plugs should be removed after installation of the carb. I don't doubt you guys, it's just annoying that Holley didn't warn of this. Do you know if the brass plugs come with the new carb or will I have to go in search of them? Do you know the size? I'm at work and don't have the carb in front of me. Do the sight plugs just unscrew with a screw driver or what? any help is appreciated.

The Brass Plugs are usually supplied installed, the clear plastic plugs are meant only for tuning purposes. You should have your brass plugs in the box still or ???? The plastic plugs are meant to come out with finger turning, if they dont, they will be swaged onto the threads like these were, so better to remove the carburetor and the fuel bowls, then trim the swaged plastic off the inside so you can remove them. PITA !!!!:frown:

I Just got home and checked my carb and the brass plugs are installed. I guess I never installed the plastic ones to check the float levels when I mounted the carb. That's why I didn't remember installing the brass plugs! Thanks for the heads up!

I guess I never had heard that Holley themselves were supplying those clear plugs. All the ones I've ever seen were aftermarket, and they had the same problem.

Acrylic or ABS ones probably wouldn't last 5 minutes. I think the aftermarket ones were/are Lexan, and they last long enough that you quit paying attention even if you were initially wary. Lexan is some tough stuff, but its resistance to solvents, especially gasoline, isn't so great.

I called the Holley tech line yesterday (before I got home to check my carb) to ask about this. The tech guy said that the carbs are shipped with the brass plugs installed, as were mine. The plastic sight plugs are in a sealed plastic bag with "o" ring seals and are meant to be installed while setting the float levels.. No mention of the hazard of leaving the plastic plugs installed in my literature or any warning to be sure to remove them when done. But the tech did say they now have an addendum that they include with all new carbs purchased.
