Hood rocket seal?

451 Views 19 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  ETriggs
I’m prepping the hood for paint again and got to wondering about the hood rockets. The set I have I bought used and didn’t have any type of seal between them and the hood. Should there be any gasket or seal there?

There wasn’t any my hood when I replaced the original rockets on my 57 and the new ones didn’t come with any.

Thanks! It seems a bit clunky against the paint.
I just got mine repainted and it had a thin gasket between the rocket and the hood. You might do a bit more checking.

56 has a gasket for the hood ornament 57 does not.
🤔 I sense an opportunity to create one.

I’m thinking of lining the underside of the edge that contacts the hood with a very thin strip of rubber. Maybe a rubber gasket on the back.
I’m thinking something like a headlight bezel seal with a lip on it.

A light brushing of the rubber dip for tools stuff where contact might be made?

Just put a piece of black electrical tape where it makes contact.

I have some emblem adhesive, I may put that on with some of the 1/16” rubber seal I bought to do the side glass. I have plenty of it….I always end up buying 4 times as much as I need.

No seals originally, but may be a good idea since they sit directly onto the paint

That’s what I’m thinking. I put mine on to check the fit and store them, they rubbed the paint quite a bit. I will come up with a solution tomorrow.

That gasket is aftermarket only, Never a factory part.
I seriously doubt you can use a gasket of 1/16" or even 1/32" thickness - the rocket will no longer fit in the hole.

This would be just under the lip where it sits on top of the metal. Will give it a shot tomorrow before I squirt more paint.
I trial fitted my rockets and when I would tighten the bolts the scoop would "fall off" one edge. I trial fitted in a pair of 1/16"
shims and it made the scoops solid so I tacked them in. Still in primer. I am interested in your gasket approach.

So, I tested the material I have that is a T-seal. I sorta like it. It matches the seal around the headlight trim.
