I had my 1955 body off the frame and at a body shop. The ID plate on the passenger side of the cowl was removed for paint, and lost/misplaced?
Does anyone know of a source to have the plate reproduced? Where is the secondary ID on the frame if 55's have one? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

The cowl or trim tag does not contain the vin # of the car. It contains the body # and other information. You can get a reproduction here....http://www.trimtags.com/imagegallery/displayimage.php?album=2&pos=0 ....The # on the frame is part of the vin # that is on the door post tag. It is on top of the frame under the drivers seat area. You need a mirror and good light along with a clean frame to find it.

Is it possible to have a cowl tag reproduced with the exact DNA of the car using the VIN or I'm I missing something?
If I understand your question, no, there are no records that contain the paint code, trim, body style, accesories, ect of your car from the VIN number. The vin # is not on the cowl tag. The cowl tag can be reproduced to match your car.

Because there is no information of body number vs. vin number available, most of the professional restorers will extrapolate a body number from as near to adjacent vin numbers of similar body styles made at that plant as possible. They would then have a tag made by the previously mentioned tag duplicators. Remember, the data needs to be believable and stand up to checking from other available carsThe chances of you finding a cowl tag with acceptable body number is minimal. The other information should be able to be gained from evidence from the car itself, ie. original body color, trim, options such as tinted glass, power windows, power seats, a/c etc. If your car was a 57 I would be able to help as I have a database of trim tags details vs. vins.
