Just received a Victor-Reinz gasket kit for a 283 4bl. The exhaust manifold gaskets are metal on one side and smooth grey on the other. Which side goes to the engine and which to the manifold? Also, do I use any gasket sealer or cement?

I think the metal goes out toward the manifold(exhaust) but look closely on the gasket and see if it says. No reason for any gasket sealer, once you bolt it down it won't be going anywhere.......

Metal facing away from the block. The theory here is that if there is any "movement" between the manifold and block-heating and contracting-, the metal allows for a " sliding " effect between the manifold and gasket surface. That's difficult to imagine so take it for what it's worth.
