The tread width ( not section width)should be within 90% of the wheel width. So, if you put a tire say 6.5 to 7.5 inch tread on 7 inch wheels you will be fine. Some folks just put whatever the want on and problems may occurr. Example: putting too wide a tire on a wheel will cause excessive roll in the tire itself which can result in poor handleing. Too narrow a tire will result in the tire being stretched and won't flex as it should for traction.
