Our " local speed shop" was a great place to shop at, it was Douglas Speed and Sport in Silver Spring ,MD.
I knew the owner well, he was a great guy and sadly passed away recently. He was well connected in the hot rod world and was always fair with folks.

We had 2 or 3 speed shops within 20 miles of us, as well as Western Auto. Our sort-of hangout was Reid's Automotive in Whitman, MA, they built MANY racing engines in our area including a number of NHRA and IHRA record holders. Still in business today. I like those Rocket wheels, $60 for a set of 4, where did they go?

Like the song says, " those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end....." Sad to think of all the speed shops gone these days. Now nothing but Orielys, Autozone, NAPA and such. Here in Wichita area we had Hall's Speed Shop, Ted's Dyno-tune and couple more who's name eludes me. A time when so many wheels, headers, valve covers and more made such a wall decor and one could drool over so many offerings. Miss those days,........ sigh

We had Winners Circle later on.
Early, we relied on Honest Charlies in Chattanooga, Tn. 😎
A couple local speed shops were Tiller's Garage, a Ford guy, and Dean Watts @ Peoria Speed Shop.
The real deal was Selkirks. He was a died in the wool A/GS Willys guy that build some awesome 392's.

I had a shop near me I loved to hang out.when I was 17. I bought my first 55 at the time with no motor or tyranny and no interior. The shop owners took me under their wing and used to stop by my house giving guidance and help with getting it running - which I eventually did. You won't get service like that these days.

My Glory Days! Yea got my start Jr Year in High School 1972, after school and weekends working in the local Autoparts/Speed Shop, Kenview Auto & Kompetition in West Chester & Kennett Square Pa. stayed there till 1979 when I began my 43 year career in insurance. Anyway, we catered to the Dirt trackers and local Drag Racers. Sold all the good stuff, got to know parts by heart, who ran what. Sunoco Racing Gas and Alcohol. Had a full service machine shop. We would attend the SEMA shows in Vegas to get up on the latest, met some pretty cool people along the way. Not quite the 60's but not far off.

When I first had a car and money to spend on it, there were no speed shops where I lived. But there was a guy that sold stuff out of his basement. Bought a few things there, traction bars, headers, an Edelbrock intake. And I had what I think was an Honest Charley's catalog. Should have kept that.

Here in my home town we had 3 honest to goodness speed shops we had a Goodies, A Service Center and Don Dotseth had his shop. I was very good friends with Don and the owner of Service Center (Jeff) Don was the go to guy on Carburetors and Jeff was the drag racer that had the fastest stuff around. I did not do much business with Goodies but they were prosperous.

here is a shot of Goodies. It was next door to my high school

Service Center was a great place to hang out, I must have destroyed 50 of these Tee Shirts.

Pops I was in the Navy at the Naval Air Tech training school in Millington, TN in 1977. One day standing in chow line, there was a guy I graduated from high school with I knew since 5th grade in a second line next to me. I did bring my car back after Christmas break from MN, since I knew I had orders to go to Miton, FL in the panhandle area. But, never drove into town off base.

I believe that's about the same time I was there on instructor duty.

Jim still does all my machine and balancing work (since 82 in my case) as well as my dyno tunes, Jim and Jim Jr are top notch in my book, and I drive from central Ma because it's worth it.
