I am trying to bench test the power steering on my 57 Chevy - with the pump running the cylinder will retract from the extened position. My problem is I can not shift the spooler control valve to extend the cylinder. The problem is I can not move the spooler control valve to cause the cylinder to extend from the retracted position. THE SPOOLER JUSTWON'T MOVE.

This could be so many things. A little history would help narrow it down.

What exactly have you done to the system? Rebuilt the control valve? Changed from a stock gen-mt pump to a late pump? List everything.

The pump and spooler control valve and the cylinder are original.
I bought the set up about 20 years ago. At that time it was supposed to have been rebuilt. The clyinder if extended will retract with the pump running. My problem is I can't shift the spooler control valve to see if the cylinder will extend. I am trying to do this on my work bench with a 1750 RPM motor running the pump.

Several possibilities:

Valve was assembled incorrectly, look in the shop manual for correct procedure and correct part placement (I would reseal all the components anyway....20 year old seals = trouble). The thing most folks do wrong (that can cause the symptom you describe) is not tightening the adaptor plug enough, when done right the gap between the plug flange and the sleeve should be about 1/16". Again, look at the shop manual procedure and the last sentence will make more sense.

Check hose connections, this is how they should be: on the pump the SMALL connection goes to the SMALL connection on the valve, and consequently the pump LARGE to valve LARGE. Production hoses professionally made can't be connected wrong but if the hoses are homemade they could have been made wrong.

Thank you for the information. Where do you suggest that I purchase the rebuild kit for the spooler control. If you have rebuilt these in the past with good results I would like to use his supplier. Any and all information would help. Thnks again.

David, Jalapeno is not tooting his horn loud enough to reach you.

Go to chevyps.com, that is Jalapeno's business, he can fix you up with whatever you need for power steering for 55-57s, especially the stock systems, and certainly the stock power steering valve.

Sounds like your "rebuilt" valve probably has some shelf wear - might be rusted up or sticking.
