What color did the Oil Filter canister come in?
On your '55 there are basically 2 choices. The early models did not have an external oil filter, so they were offered as a dealer installed option. The dealer installed canisters were blue and orange. Later in 1955 they offered a factory installed oil filter, and those canisters were semi-gloss black with a white decal.

For your '56 the oil filter canisters were semi-gloss black with a white decal.

So black it is what is the paint code?
There were a number of suppliers for the oil filter used on the 6 cyl motors. There was notheing new about it for 1955, it was carried over from 54 and all the way back into the 40's.

If the filter was made by AC it was supplied in THEIR LOGO COLORS of pale orange/yellow and a special blue. Some sources say it could have been black, but I have never seen a New one in black.

Here are some photos of NOS ones and a rare V-8 Air Conditioning one.

There is a publication "Chevy 55 - 56 - 57" by Mike Mueller.

There are several pics of the oil canistors in several V8 55`s that are all with a blue body & orange lid.

On page 34 there is an AC Delco filter that is not only different in shape but is black numbers read type so or sc - 6558A type P - 115 element.

The pictures of the cannistor you have are all painted blue with orange top.
