So I am at my final stages of a 5 year rebuild. The car is bone stock and I am putting together the shift linkage. I paid someone to rebuild the powerglide but I am having touble shifting it into park. I have another powerglide sitting on the floor so I can see how it is supposed to shift. I do not have any of the linkage connected and can move the shift linkage by hand. It moves like it is going into park but it will not move all the way there. Any ideas?
Try turning the output shaft a little. Hopefully this is all it needs to drop into park.
If it still won't go into park the problem could be that the internal shift linkage wasn’t assembled correctly. When the converter housing is joined to the main case it is important the internal shift shaft (located in the main case) and lever it joins with (located in the converter housing) are properly aligned before pushing the converter housing and the case together.
Whe I had that problem, an old timer said to replace my rear engine mounts because they were sagging and kinking the linkage. So I replaced my rear engine mounts and could shift it into park again.
Ok so I was able to get it back into park. I rotated the drive shaft and it shifted. The problem now is that it is only has park and neutral. The transmission shifts through all five positions but it stays in neutral through neutral drive low and reverse.......I need this car for my wedding in 13 days...PLEASE HELP!!!
Fluid level is good. Transmission mounts are fine. It did shift fine at one time. I know I said that I watched the shifter on the pg shift but is it possible that it is still a linkage problem?
I know I had drive for sure. I just purchased another car that I used the body for. I have had the chassis done for a while now. The wheels always spun when the motor ran. I ran it once a week. I finally put a body on it and connected everything. Then when I started it the wheels spun. I knew it wasn't in park. That is when I started the thread. So the linkage is all new so is the kickdown linkage. When I was trying to get it into park I broke the neutral safety switch. I am sure it was not in the correct position on the mast jacket. I have jumped out the nss.
So I made sure the fluid was at the full when hot mark and it was. I disconnected the shift linkage from the transmission. Then I manually shifted the transmission through the gears. The car does not roll in park but it does in any other position. This was all done with the car off. This only leaves the actual transmission. I suppose I am going to have to remove it and take it somewhere due to my time restraints. Unless anyone knows where the problem could be in the transmission that would make this a quick fix?
So this is a learning experience. Apparently the car will roll if it is in gear as long as it is off. I learned this today. When I got home from work I checked the transmission with the car running. I put it on jack stands and ran it un each gear. The wheels did not spin in park but did in every other gear. I was able to stop the wheel with my hand so that is the definite proof the transmission is not working properly. I spent the next few hours removing it. Looks like it is going back to the shop to get repaired. Wish I had the time but the wedding is in 10 days and there is no time for mistakes. Hope I get it back in time!
What happened is that when the guy matted the front housing to the main housing he dint align the shaft assy FORK into the lever housing that (Farm boy shows) . The shaft assy will still put the PG in park and with the car wheels off the ground the tires will turn like it's in gear but if you can hold them stopped that tells me your problem is the shaft assy was not matted to the lever housing. . Now he must separate the front housing again to Matt the two pieces . I've known many guys that have made the same mistake and don't know it till they try to put the PG into gear. R or D and L Sorry!:banghead:
So the transmission guy still has the PG. I need to have this together no later than Wednesday. I ran across a 67 chevelle powerglide. Will this fit with minimal mods? Is there another one that I can put in for my wedding and then I can put the two speed PG back in when I get it?
so the transmission guy is saying that there are no problems with the transmission. He said that everything was lined up correctly. He also stated that the input shaft seal was torn up. He wants me to check and see if there is anything on the back of the crankshaft that may have pushed the torque converter further than it should have been in the bell housing. I did notice a leak from the transmission and I am sure it came from there. I cannot see how a seal would cause the transmission not to run. I had enough oil the whole time. One thing I did notice was when it was on the ground in drive, if I ran way up in the RPM's the car would begin to roll ever so slowly. Does this sound like a torque converter problem? I am beging to think twice about this transmission guy. Also, is there a way to check a torque conveter if it is suspected of being bad? Is there a readly available good torque converter for sale? I mean are these things stocked somewhere or are they hard to come by? Please God let me get this thing together by friday!!!3:
or you could call me if you wont 530-265 4207 Ca.
OK to understand this first.
1. Did YOU remove the PG then take it to be rebuilt
2 if YOU took the PG back to the guy how did he know it was ok if it wasn't in the car
3 when YOU installed the PG in the car did you make sure the TC was pushed back and that you had to turn the TC to align the flywheel bolts later
4 Give use a brake down of what you did step by step installing the PG back into the car
:anim_25:
Hope you make it.
I had my last 57 at my son's wedding. I transported the bride and groom to the reception. That was the biggest kick. Everyone loved that car. It made the whole day better.

OK sorry I went mia for a while. I got the transmission back put it in and surprise it works..........but and there is always a but. I cannot get it to shift into reverse. I can put it in reverse with my hand at the transmission. It just won't go there with the lever. I worked for a few hours and never got it. There is no definitive click into reverse. Argggggggghhhhhhhh. Oh the wedding was nice even without the car
The missing detent button would not stop reverse from being selected. I'll tell you what happened with mine, removed the transmission, found that it was ok, then put it back in, like you, still no reverse, so I found that the last linkage was over centering at the end of the selection stroke, once I adjusted the length to get a better push angle, it works fine now.
Got it. Finally thank you Jesus!!!! The linkage on the transmission was bent. Just a quick bend with the wrench and presto reverse! I also want to say thank you all for helping me work through these problems. I can now say I hate transmissions more than control arm bushings. Just kidding. Also, thanks to 55 copper you are truly a great guy!!!
