I'm am old man and don't appreciate a loud exhaust system anymore......The PO of my '55 installed headers (rusty now), good size pipes, and loud mufflers....Its so loud, my wife and I can't really enjoy going down the road togther.....I'm going to put on 2.5 rams horns....Looking for some recommendations on some quieter mufflers that won't break the bank.

I got some summit brand ones for mine. Not too loud and still has a nice note, and they are cheap as chips
Most likely they are aluminum....How are they holding up?.....Got a link or part number?

David- I found that Cherry Bomb Vortex is suprisingly quiet. They advertise them to be for SUVs and trucks. I don't have them but a friend put them on his 383 El Camino. Cruising around you can barely hear them inside the car (unless he jumps on it, but even them it doesn't scream at you). Funny thing is he bought them because they are very free flowing, but he's thinks they're too quiet and is going to swap them for flowmasters.

:) I've always liked Flowmasters, have 40's on both '56's. Nice sounds and not to loud.

Don, aka.....the hamsman
I had Flowmaster 40's switched to Flowmaster 50's on my big block 62 Belair... Maybe it was the other way around but the bottom line (I'm an old guy too) was they were too blasted loud too... Had the muffler shop install a house brand glass pack and lived happily ever after... Later, Dave

After an 1150 mile round trip in my 55, I'm thinking quieter too.
The drone at 3400 RPM for hours at a time got a little much even for me.
I'm routed out the sides in front of the rear wheels, so that contributes to it some too.
I've got cut outs so when I want to be loud I can, with the touch of a button.:party0031:
Those are really fun too. I cruise into a show or cruise in and you know how there's people walking or just standing in the middle of the road.
I just open up the headers and they move out of the way. :happy0030:
Thanks for the tips on muffs. I'll have to check into those.

I put a set of the below mufflers on my big block 57, They really are very quite, and they only cost 81.00 each, they are designed for the 1968 caddy with a 472-500 cubic inch engine, so they don't restrick flow and run like a new car.

You can get bone stock mufflers from Rock Auto for about $60 each. They are quiet but not as quiet as one might think! Still I get a lot of compliments from strangers, "Man, your car sounds nice!". But they are not like a sophisticated new car system where they have really tailored the sound.

I like mine loud I run cherry bomb glass packs. in your case you cant go wrong with flow masters great products. I have also heard good things about dynomax mufflers. personally I would replace the mufflers before swapping out the headers for ram horns would save alot of $ and headers are better performance wise. if they are rusty you could sand blast emm and get emm coated or just high temp paint them.

Otis.....I have been leaning toward the Walker Quiet Flows....Price looks good and seems like they will fill the bill for what I'm after.

The Dynamax Super Turbos are cheaper and are available in different inlet/outlet sizes and configurations. I read somewhere that the 20" version actually flow better than the shorter ones and are more quiet too.

My only concern on the longer ones is whether I can get them to fit if I use an X pipe behind my full length headers.

After I get my E brake cable hooked up, I am going to do a mock-up to see how I can fit everything. Then I will make my decision on the mufflers

Got to agree Dave, I have 40's and they are too loud out on the open road, sound good at idle but I don't spend much time idling around:D I'm looking at some magnaflows or something quieter. If I want it loud I just bring my kids along:eek:
