THis maybe too easy, but I'm ready to pull my 605 from my '56 Bel Air for a new CPP 5000. The pitman Arm and power steering lines removed. Just the bolts (w/o nuts) and rag joint left. I've removed the lower rag joint bolt. I thought I could remove the 605 box by lifting and pulling down. It is either too heavy, or the rag joint must come all the way out first. It does not seem possible, Not a lot of space.

Is there a trick here, or I'm not not seeing it right?

You will probably have to loosen the steering shaft from the rag joint and collar and pull the shaft up into the column. I think the frame is in the way to move the box straight down.

Yes, you'll have to do whatever is necessary to pull either the box or the column out of the rag joint. I'd go for the column as Don suggests. Remember you'll have to repeat the procedure in reverse when you re-assemble.

I just installed a 500 box. I pulled the steering column back into the car and took the rag-joint off.
