need sugestions... Baught a chrome 55 rear end on ebay for my new gasser project; was gonna go with an olds but got a good deal on the stocker and will look good with a chrome straight axle. My question is a stock posi very strong or go with an aftermarket? and what axles? im not gonna race it...just want it "big kid" proof for when im out and about lol

The stock posi unit eliminates the weakest part namely open carrier spider gears and as long as it is in good shape its not worth going to a aftermarket posi, the axles and the bearing caps are next. Also you may want to reinforce the spring pads on the housing, they have been known to break loose at the weld points to the axle housing tubes as they are not welded all the way around where they contact the axle tubes.

How well the axles hold up depends on how much power you put to them and how much traction you have and how often you stress them. If your going to run it hard get some aftermarket axles and and paint a straight line from end to end and inspect them for twisting regularly.

If you have trouble with aftermarket 17 spline axles you would need to step up to a different rear end or there is a 30 spline axle conversion kits and carrier bearing girdle straps and housing re-inforcement.
See this website for the parts.
