My tire blew out on my way home from the sreet rod nationals today. It came apart and did some damage. Rim is okay. This is where I would turn to my Dad for advice. But he is no longer with us... so I look to you all for this kind of advice. Should I involve my insurance or leave them out of this incident. It is not major damage but will require minor body work and paint, which I don't do. I don't want my insurance rates to go up. I do have classic car insurance and never have had do deal with them before... thank god. Any input is appreciated.

Rudy,
Sorry to hear about your blowout. I hope that everyone is fine...other than that wild ride.

I have Grundy and 2 months after I signed up with them my windshield cracked. I called them and they just told me to take it to a shop...$900 later! I thought for sure they would axe me. Three years later, I'm still with Grundy and my rates have not gone up.

Good luck on your decision, Rudy.

Oh, and how was NSRA?

Thanks Mel
Me and the wife are fine. I am a little disgruntled about the car... but its repairable. Its at the tire shop now. They had to order the tires, they're supposed to be there by 9:30 tomorrow morning. I hope they are or I will miss the rest of the NSRA this weekend. It looks like its going to be a great weekend there. :tu I also am insured with Grundy so that is great to hear that they didn't axe you.
Oh and I am using this little incident to my advantage... I have been wanting wider tires anyway. :happy0030:

Sorry to hear about that, the body damage is the worst result. I blew a rear tire on my way home from an 1100 miles trip to Ca. last week on my ford pickup (25 miles from home). there was a teenage girl tailgating me at 75 MPH when it blew, boy did she back off and change lanes in a hurry, I got some of that tire all over her car. Maybe she will change her bad driving habits now? Dave

Rudy that is a bummer but it could have ended up a lot worse. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Dave i really doubt that that will change her driving habits.

I would turn it in to the insurance company------
You are wise to replace the tires not just the one that failed... I don't drive mine that much any more but I keep records on everything I buy for it and replace my tires when they have their 5th birthday no mater how much useable tread is left... You ought to see what a steel belted radial can do to a Corvette when it blows:eek: Glad you and Wifey are okay:D Later, Dave

Glad you and the wife are safe, I would turn it into insurance and have it repaired by a very good body shop , It looks like thier is some filler in that panel, so I would make sure that the bodyshop did a new metal repair panel instead of just putting bondo or fiberglass in and patching it. That is an area that if not repaired correctly will come back and bite you .
Also the paint matching may be an issue.

Rudy that is tough, but your ok and its repairable. I would get an estimate to see what the high end will be, if its not bad pay it, if its more than your willing to pay call the insurance. Check the serial numbers and manufacturer dates, they may be recalled, lots are if you check into it. I had Americas Tires buy me 6 new tires when mine began separating on my RV, they sold them when they were past their prime!

I posted here last year about the way to decode your tires age and how quickly they degrade(they are petroleum based) and I got nothing but grief.
The powers to be use to recommend that we not buy or drive on tires older than 6 years, now due to the foreign crap that they are putting into tires ,they have revised it to 5 years.
Some people believe that this is just tire company propaganda but we can believe what we want.

Your right Otis.. there was some filler there. Me and my Dad did a fiberglass repair there because of rust during our build. Didn't have the funds at the time to repair it properly nor the time as I was trying to get the car on the road so he could enjoy before he passed....

Oldfart you are right, its not use that ruins tires its time, and 5 years is a good measure to start watching them for cracks and checking, but even then they will separate with no notice or warning. Sun exposer is one of the major killers of tires, thats why you see people with RV's covering the tires when stored.

You got grief here:rolleyes::sign0020:

Glad you're OK and it wasn't worse. Nice to hear the comments about the way insurance handles the claims.

Sorry about the mishap.
If you did not make it to the NSRA @ Calexpo, I posted some pics.
As for as the repair I would leave the Insurance Co. out of it depending on the deductible.
