Silly question

How do you folks keep the modern gas pump from spewing gas everywhere when filling up your '55? You can't slow down most pumps and when the tank gets full you don't know it until it suddenly starts spewing out of the filler spout.

The 55 is nowhere near as bad as the 57, but in my area you can slow the pumping down. Sometimes moving the handle up or down to align with the filler tube helps.

Problem is where I fill up the pump goes full speed or shuts off and before you say go elsewhere the next nearest station is 20 miles.

Exactly how i refuel the 57.

it is a 55, it just dumps on the ground,

so no smoking :ROFLMAO:
I put my ear up to the nozzle opening and fill slowly.
Fill gas cans and then transfer.......or take a long transmission funnel along
I was going to make a joke about using a lighter to watch for gas coming up the tube...but instead I will just agree with "listen carefully, fill slowly".

Is there only one pump at this location? Most stations have at least four; have you tried any of the other pumps?
The nozzle may only have one set latch, but you should still be able to control the flow of gasoline manually, by hand.
I've never encountered a pump that (when operated manually) was all on or all off, I'm always able to regulate flow with hand pressure on the handle.

probably sped the pumps up so you have to watch the nozzle, not the price rolling up like wheel of fortune :p
Our pumps here can be slowed down from the trigger, you can usually hear the air being pushed out of the tank as you are filling with fuel.
Some of the pumps around here can be tough, I have learned to just ever so slightly squeeze the handle, I mean like you're disarming a bomb squeeze, and hold the nozzle so the gas hits the side of the fill tube, not straight down so it swirls down and keep a close eye on it with a flashlight. Once I see it start to hit the neck at the bottom I usually stop. Trial and error. Besides gives more time for people to come over and look at the car tell me how nice it is and ask me if its a Bel Air and they used to have one and................ Didn't say it wasn't a PIA but worth it in the end.

I listen as well, Also take a wad of paper towels and hold at base of hose spout to catch any burping fuel then simple toss em
Well let's look at the options.
1. Control pump speed. I'll have to check out some of the other pumps. They have about 10 pumps so a possibility.
2. Listen closely. Did I mention I'll be 80 next month. ;)
3. Use a flashlight. I like this one along with, flow the gas down the side of the filler tube.
4. Fill cans and transfer to car. That works. I've done this when working on the gas guage/ sending unit.
Thanks all, appreciate for the suggestions.

I don't think many of us are familiar with disarming bombs, LOL

It's kinda like waking up a bear-----VERY CAREFULLY
Why is it a requirement to fill the tank to the top & worry about overflow?
Suggest a 10 gallon purchase when fuel is required.

Well you see there in lies another problem. My gas guage does not read correctly (but let's not get into that) from full to empty takes about 8 gallons so at around empty I refill. Takes about 8 gallons. Anyway I'm paranoid about running out so I fill it up.

as above mentioned, just stick nozzle all the way in and take paper towels and pack around the filler hole and then ditch the towels.
