Neat stuff. Wonder if it really lasts that long? Out here it sure gets a lot hotter than 77 degrees, and for longer stretches of time than other places too.

I am a big proponent of solar. In fact, we lived off grid in a second home for 2 years using only solar and batteries. We did have an 8kw diesel for backup but we only used it for a total of 66 hours.

At our primary home we recently looked into both GAF and Tesla. GAF shingles, produce 45 watts per shingle. The Tesla glass roof provides 71 watts with the same area. Tesla, however is not offering installations northern Ohio.

If you have the space, the GAF shingles are not a bad option. However, this solution presupposes that one not only needs a new roof but has a roof pitch is such that the sun hits the roof roughly perpendicular to the panels and has a south facing roof. As anyone that owns solar panels knows, they run extremely hot.

In the end, I could not afford the combined cost of solar and a new roof. With the price of solar dropping and the efficiency of cells increasing, it probably makes sense to wait.
